Good Watch – Lotus 99T Active Suspension

with No Comments

This video is tailored to those interested in late 80’s and early 90’s Formula 1 technology, which in the eyes of many represents the pinnacle of the F1 engineering. In the hands of Ayrton Senna, the Lotus 99T won twice and stood on other steps of the podium six times during the 1987 season. All this despite the active suspension system adding a hefty 55lbs pounds to the car and sapping an estimated 5% of the Honda Turbo’s power. In ’87, funding issues struck Lotus and they failed to secure the most current variant of the Honda Turbo. As a result they were forced to use the 1986 variant. By overcoming this handicap, the 99T proved the effectiveness of active suspension. This video, which is certainly sporting a 1987 patina, is a simple reminder of why active suspension was and continues to be such an amazing technology. Dig in nerds, this one is for you.
