Product Description

The CL MotoTech Suzuki GS11000e shock kit is a complete adaptation of a RFY unit specifically for Suzkuki GS1100 models, but may also work for other variants. The shock package has an clevis that is specially machined to the extra wide GS swingarm mount. The damper is adjusted specifically for the GS and is optimized across all aspects. The kit is 330mm in length, which matched the stock shock length. The spring is a 140lbs/inch unit that is slightly stiffer than the stock spring. This also lends to a sportier ride but also helps supports todays riders who are more heavily clad in gear than 30 years ago. As with all my builds, you have your choice between Maxima 3 weight, 7w, and 10w oil. The shock is then charged with nitrogen to assure consistent and reliable performance.

About The Shock

The shock itself is a modified and serviced RFY shock body and piston. The body is lightweight aluminum with adjustable preload. The piston and shaft are of steel construction. The piston is of a deflective disk design and can be tuned via shim stack adjustment, oil weight change, and reservoir pressure. An important feature of the package is the reservoir which allows for the pressurization of the shock which promotes consistent performance even in extreme environments. The entire package with springs weighs around 10lbs. total and offers significant weight savings over stock and steel bodied units.

I have a set of Chris Livengood modified RFY Shocks on my owned since new 1983 Suzuki GS 1100E. I installed the shocks August 3, 2015. Chris machined a perfect set of lower clevis mounts to properly fit the 22mm Suzuki swing arm eyes. I think total cost was $250.00. I could not be more pleased. My all up riding weight is as high as 250 when soft saddle bags full and max riding gear worn. Usually closer to 220. I have ridden more than 10,000 miles with these shocks and in a word, these shocks are Wonderful. 140 lb/in springs, 10 wt. Maxima oil and…..I think…. 50 lbs. Nitrogen (have that spec somewhere too). Pre load set at less than 3/16 inch. Pre load is absolutely something that has to be properly set. Too much (very common) and rebound, on almost any shock is really sudden and harsh.

Northern California secondary roads (many primary too) are absolute crap. Rough and poorly patched. The damping and rebound are well balanced for my riding style and road conditions. Very very seldom bottom out…..and when they do… jarring. The front suspension has straight rate aftermarket springs, Race Tech Gold Emulators, 5/8 spring pre load, 15 wt. Maxima oil level is 5 1/2 inches below fork top. Ride is supple and well controlled at both ends.

Contrary perhaps to ‘normal’ thinking re machinery and related suspension parts, these shocks perform better as the miles accumulate. Riding weight has not changed from parameters listed above nor have the roads improved……if anything, they continue to deteriorate here. Initially I was concerned because usable the travel is about 3/4 inch less than the stock shocks. After some patient conversations and emails shared with Chris, I experimented with the pre load and once set ‘properly’ I have not had to change it. In my experience, these shocks perform better today than when they were first installed. And, they worked great when new and properly set up.

Chris, thank you for your input and your support.
